Going to the dentist without insurance
Short answer: Plenty of people in Trinidad have no dental cover, and staying away until something hurts is the most expensive way to handle it. An examination with x-rays is the cheapest appointment in dentistry and the one that prevents the costly ones. Our prices are published, so you can plan the spend rather than guess at it.
What to spend first, if the budget is finite
In rough order of what returns most for the money:
- An examination with x-rays. You cannot plan around a problem you have not found, and decay between teeth is invisible without them. What an examination involves.
- A cleaning. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it is painless until it is advanced — which is exactly why it gets left.
- Small fillings, early. A filling is a fraction of a root canal and a crown, and the difference between the two is often a matter of months.
- Then everything else, in the order clinical urgency dictates.
The pattern that costs people most is waiting for pain. Pain arrives late in almost every dental problem, and the treatment that stops it is nearly always larger than what would have been needed a year earlier.

Starting prices. What you pay depends on what you actually need, and you get an itemised quotation before any treatment begins. Prices confirmed 2026-08-23.

Publishing prices is unusual here, and it is deliberate. If you are paying for it yourself, being able to work out the cost before you phone is the difference between booking and putting it off.
Two things that cost you nothing
A second opinion. If another dentist has given you a plan and the figure has stopped you, bring it. Second opinions are free, with no conditions, on any dentist's plan — and we are comfortable saying when work is not needed. Investigations required to give the opinion are charged, and you are quoted first.
Asking. Message us on WhatsApp and ask what something costs, or whether what you are describing sounds urgent. Nobody is going to bill you for the question.
If you might be getting cover soon
Worth knowing before you sign anything: major work such as crowns, dentures and implants is often subject to a waiting period in the first year of a plan, so a new policy may not help with the large item you are hoping it will. Preventive treatment usually starts sooner.
And if you do get cover, here is how it works here.
Common questions
How much does a dental check-up cost in Trinidad without insurance?
At Smile Works DentaSpa an examination starts at TT$280 and x-rays from TT$85. Our prices are published in full, which is unusual locally, so you can plan the cost before booking.
What should I get done first if I have no dental insurance?
An examination with x-rays, then a cleaning, then any small fillings while they are still small. Waiting for pain is the most expensive approach, because pain arrives late and the treatment that stops it is larger than what would have been needed earlier.
Can I get a free dental consultation in Trinidad?
A second opinion on another dentist’s treatment plan is free here, with no conditions. Investigations needed to give that opinion — new x-rays, sensitivity testing — are charged, and you are quoted first and may decline.
