Do I have to pay the dentist upfront?
Short answer: It depends on your plan, and on whether the practice is in your insurer’s network. With a Guardian Life easiClaim card at a Dental Preferred Provider, no — you swipe, and pay only the part your plan does not cover. Under many other arrangements you pay in full and claim it back afterwards. Ask before the appointment, not at the end of it.
The two ways it usually works
Cashless, at the desk. The practice holds a direct arrangement with the insurer. Your benefits are checked, the claim goes in, and you pay only the shortfall. This is what the Guardian easiClaim card does here.
Pay and reclaim. You settle the full bill, the practice gives you a completed claim form, and you submit it to your insurer. The money comes back weeks later. Guardian's easiCollect service pays settlements straight into your bank account rather than by cheque, which shortens the tail.
Neither is unusual. What is unreasonable is finding out which one applies while you are standing at the desk with a numb face.
Why a shortfall exists even when you are covered
"Covered" rarely means "covered in full". A plan paying 80% of a restorative treatment leaves you the other 20%, and once the annual maximum is reached it pays nothing further that year whatever the percentage says.
This is why an estimate before treatment is worth more than a good percentage. Knowing you owe a specific figure lets you decide. Discovering it afterwards does not.
How we handle it
We check entitlement before treatment rather than after, quote you itemised, and submit any pre-authorisation your plan needs. If your Guardian plan carries an easiClaim card, you see your own out-of-pocket figure before anything begins.
And if you have no cover at all, our prices are published — you can work out the cost before you pick up the phone.
Common questions
Can I pay the dentist with my insurance card directly?
With a Guardian Life easiClaim card at a Dental Preferred Provider, yes — you swipe it and pay only the portion your plan does not cover. Other insurers and plans vary; some require you to pay in full and claim the money back.
How long does a dental insurance refund take?
It depends on the insurer and how the claim is submitted. Guardian’s easiCollect service pays settlements directly into your bank account through the banks’ ACH system rather than by cheque, which removes the wait for a cheque to arrive and clear.
What if I cannot afford the shortfall?
Tell us before treatment. Larger work can often be staged so the most urgent part is done first, and you are always quoted before anything begins, so the decision stays yours.
