Does my insurance cover the dentist?
Short answer: Usually, at least partly — most local group health plans include some dental benefit. What varies enormously is how much. Cleanings and examinations are typically covered at the highest rate, fillings and root canals at a lower one, and crowns, dentures and implants at the lowest, often after a waiting period. Cosmetic work is usually not covered at all.
The three numbers that decide everything
Dental plans look complicated and are mostly three numbers. Find these and you can predict almost any bill.
- The percentage the plan pays for each category of treatment. Preventive work is usually covered at the highest rate, restorative work lower, major work lower again.
- The annual maximum — the ceiling on what the plan pays in a policy year, across everything combined. This is the one that surprises people. How the annual maximum works.
- The deductible, if there is one — an amount you pay before the plan begins paying at all.
Everything else on the schedule is detail hanging off those three.
Where to find them without reading the whole policy
Ask your employer's HR department or plan administrator for the schedule of benefits. It is usually one or two pages, and it is the document that actually answers the question — the full policy wording rarely does, quickly.
If your plan is with Guardian Life, their easiConnect health portal shows your plan records, and an easiClaim card checks your benefits in real time when you swipe it at our reception desk.
Or bring the card to us. Checking entitlement before treatment is something we do as a matter of course, and it costs you nothing to ask.
The two questions worth asking before treatment
Whatever the plan, these two answers prevent most disputes.
"Does this need pre-authorisation?" Larger work often needs the insurer's agreement in advance. Starting without it is the commonest way people end up paying for treatment they believed was covered.
"What will I owe?" Not "is it covered" — covered and covered in full are different things, and the gap between them is where the unpleasant surprise lives. What dental insurance does not cover.
Common questions
Does health insurance in Trinidad usually include dental?
Most group health plans include some dental benefit, though the amount varies widely. Individual plans differ more. Your schedule of benefits is the document that answers it — usually one or two pages, available from your plan administrator.
How do I find out what my dental plan covers?
Ask your employer or plan administrator for the schedule of benefits. If your plan is with Guardian Life, swiping an easiClaim card at our reception desk checks your benefits in real time. You can also bring the card to us and we will confirm your entitlement before treatment.
Is a dental cleaning covered by insurance?
Cleanings and examinations are usually covered at the highest rate a plan offers, because they are the treatments that prevent expensive work later. Many plans cover a set number per year.
