Dental Implants
Short answer: A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth, with a crown attached on top. It is the only replacement that preserves the bone where the tooth was, because the bone keeps being loaded. Treatment runs over several months, most of which is healing rather than appointments.
Why the root matters
Every other way of replacing a tooth replaces the part you can see. An implant replaces the part you cannot.
That is not a detail. Jawbone maintains itself in response to load, and when a tooth is lost the bone that held it stops being loaded and begins to shrink away. A bridge or a denture sits on top of that shrinking bone and does nothing to stop it — which is why a denture that fit well five years ago no longer does. An implant is loaded like a root, so the bone around it has a reason to stay.

What the process involves
1. Assessment
Examination and x-rays, including 3D imaging where needed, to see how much bone there is and where the nerves and sinuses sit. Not everyone is a straightforward candidate, and this is where that is established — honestly, before anything is committed to.
2. Placement
The implant is placed into the bone under local anaesthetic. Most people are surprised by how ordinary it is; it is usually more comfortable than having the tooth out was. Sedation is available if you would prefer it.
3. Healing
The bone grows onto the implant surface over roughly three to six months. This is the long part, and it is not optional — it is what makes the implant solid. A temporary tooth can usually be worn meanwhile, so you are not left with a visible gap.
4. The crown
Once integrated, impressions are taken and the crown is made and fitted. From then on you clean it like a tooth.
Is an implant right for you?
Implants are not automatically the answer. They need enough bone, healthy gums, and a commitment to cleaning — implants can be lost to gum disease much as teeth are. Smoking materially raises the failure rate, and uncontrolled diabetes affects healing.
